Midnight Transfer’s drill gets him a spot in the Santa Anita Derby according to Carla Gaines
The 3-year-old Warren B. Williamson owned colt, Midnight Transfer has shown plenty of promise in his short career, and he is proving out to be a good horse on dirt which is always an encouraging sign for trainers at this time of the year.
Carle Gaines trained colt, Midnight Transfer, turned in a real good work at Santa Anita Park going over a distance of 5 furlongs. The drill impressed trainer Carla Gaines that much that she decided to send her colt to the Grade 1, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby
on 7 April, 2012, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on dirt course against a good field of 3-year-old colts.
The Kentucky bred son of Hard Spun turned in a great performance, when he was sent as a 14 to 1 choice in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes over a distance of 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita Park on 10 March, 2012.
It was the first time that Midnight Transfer was running over two turns, and he finished an unexpected third on the day much to his trainer’ delight to winner Creative Cause, who finished the race in 1 minute and 41.84 seconds, as Bodemeister finished second.
Out of mare French Satin by French Deputy, Midnight Transfer broke his maiden at third asking last year, and he won his first race of the new campaign in the San Pedro Stakes at about 6 ½ furlongs on 22 January, 2012, finishing the race in 1 minute and 14.25
seconds.
“I’ll be a longshot in the Santa Anita Derby, but it is what it is," said Gaines March 25. "Mr. Williamson (who is 83) is having some health issues and he wants to see his horse run here and he wants to try the Derby, so the pressure is off. We’re just going
to do it and see what happens.”
On 24 March at Santa Anita Park, Midnight Transfer drilled five furlongs in an impressive 59 4/5 seconds, ultimately being ranked as the 10th fastest on the distance.
“Anytime you have a good horse it’s satisfying, of course,” said Gaines.
