Mie Oe Nielsen and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor dominate Women’s events - European Junior Championships
Mie Oe Nielsen and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor dominated the Women’s events on fifth day of the 2011 European Junior Swimming Championships. Nielsen clinched the title of Women’s 100m back-stroke, while O'Connor earned the gold medal of the 200m Individual Medley
(IM).
The day concluded after the completion of the 100m back-stroke, 200m IM, 100m breast-stroke and the 50m butterfly in Women’s category.
Denmark’s 15-year-old Nielsen won the title of the 100m back-stroke event, by posting a sterling time of 1 minute and 02.50 seconds. The gold medallist was almost one second above the meet record of 1 minute and 01.33 seconds, made by Great Britain’s Elizabeth
Simmonds in 2007.
Nielsen was only 0.25 seconds faster from her following swimmer, Jessica Fullalove of Great Britain, who appeared on the finishing wall for the silver medal by completing her swim in a time of 1 minute and 03.15 seconds.
In the next event, Great Britain’s O’Connor showered her expertise in the 200m IM, where she pocketed the gold medal of the event in a comfortable manner. She claimed the title of the 200m event in scintillating fashion, as she clocked a superb time of 2
minutes and 14.71 seconds. Her time was 0.56 seconds slower than the European junior mark of 2 minutes and 14.15 seconds, set by Grainne Murphy of Ireland in 2009.
O’Connor was followed by Hungarian swimmer, Sara Joo, who stayed almost two seconds behind the gold medallist and stepped on the podium for the silver medal, by reporting in a time of 2 minutes and 16.34 seconds. The bronze medal of the event was secured
by Anastasia Sineva of Russia, who followed them on the podium after clocking a third fastest time of 2 minutes and 16.44 seconds.
In the 100m breast-stroke meet, Anna Sztankovics of Hungary seized the gold medal of the event, by concluding her swim in a fastest time of 1 minute and 09.31 seconds. She was followed by Jenna Laukkanen of Finland, who stayed 0.17 seconds slower and touched
the wall for silver medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 09.48 seconds. Irina Novikova of Russia secured the third position of the event, by producing a time of 1 minute and 09.62 seconds.
Louise Hansson of Sweden dominated the 50m butterfly event, as she was the first swimmer to complete her one-lap swim in a time of 27.04 seconds. She was followed by Daria Tcvetkova and Svetlana Chimrova, who secured the silver and bronze medals, by submitting
a time of 27.06 and 27.22 seconds, respectively.
The session concluded after the completion of Women’s swimming events, while the winners received awards and accolades for their undisputed swims.
