Mie Oestergaard Nielsen conquers Women’s 100m backstroke semi-final - FINA Swimming Championships
Mie Oestergaard Nielsen of Denmark conquered the semi-final of Women’s 100m backstroke on initial day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday, December 12.
The Danish swimmer showed no mercy to her challengers in the semi-final of four-lap discipline and paved her way to the playoff as strongest swimmer for gold medal.
With her unrelenting efforts in the four-lap discipline, Nielsen remained in a marginal lead over her opponents and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 57.15 seconds.
Her top finish stayed 0.24 seconds faster from Rachel Goh of Australia, who concluded her race in second best place by producing a time of 57.39 seconds.
Goh was traced by Georgia Davies of Great Britain, who remained 0.02 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and touched the wall with the timing of 57.41 seconds for third position.
Subsequently, the audience witnessed exhausting efforts of Simona Baumrtova of Czech Republic, and Grace Loh of Australia for fourth position.
Both swimmers showered their expertise in the 100m event but were unable to outperform each other over the finishing blockade. They stayed 0.21 seconds slower from Davies and transpired on the finishing end for fourth place with identical timings of 57.62
seconds.
The duo was trailed by Daryna Zevina of Ukraine, who remained 0.04 seconds apart and settled on the wall for sixth position with the timing of 57.66 seconds.
Zevina was traced by Olivia Smoliga of USA, who suffered a loss of 0.08 seconds from her foregoing finisher and completed her race in seventh place by reporting a time of 57.74 seconds.
Following that, Duane da Rocha Marce of Spain faced strong contest from her following swimmer in the final 50 metres but with her utter determination, she succeeded in securing last qualification spot. Rocha Marce remained almost half body length slower
from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 58.15 seconds for eighth position.
Furthermore, Nielsen was extremely happy with her fastest qualification effort and stated that she would try to please her supporters by achieving the same in final round.
