Mighty Novak Djokovic charges to the semi-finals of the Serbia Open
Serbian wind continues to wipe out opponents as the world number two Novak Djokovic carried on his winning streak to beat Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia in the quarter-final of the Serbia Open in Belgrade, Serbia. The top seed had no real difficulty to overcome Kavcic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in 89 minutes, extending his winning streak to 26-0 in the current ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
Every winner form the racquet of Djokovic was cheered with thunderous applauds from his home crowd at the Tennis Center Novak complex on Friday. The mighty Serb blew away the Slovenian comprehensively, dropping just five games in the contest, to make it to his fifth semi-final of the running year.
Djokovic was about to quit the rain interrupted contest, as the court lines got too slippery, threatening a possible injury to the world number two at 4-1 in the second set. “I don’t want to play, I don’t want to get injured,” he shouted at the umpire, leaving the court and sitting on his chair. However, play resumed shortly afterwards once the lines were wiped.
The Slovenian competitor registered just one serve break in the second set but suffered four from the top seed. Five double faults were reported on Kavcic’s part, while Djokovic conceded just three. The world number two rarely faced any challenge from his opponent in the opener and continued with his dominancy to reel off 20 of 27 serve points. His serve precision lacked something to be desired but the Serb kept building pressure upon his rival with his power hitting and aggressive ground strokes.
Kavcic had a cautious start to the game, holding serve in his first game but Djokovic seized control of the game in the very next game to break to 3-1 with a cracking forehand winner. The top seed Serb then held serve in the rest of the games and cruised to 6-3, getting one up in the contest.
Djokovic kept his dominance going in the following set as well, breaking early to lead 4-1, when he faced the only hiccup of the contest. Kavcic registered his first break of the matchup but the underdog Slovenian couldn’t withstand the furry of Djokovic. The world number two finally wound up the contest at 6-2 to step into the semis of the Serbia Open, where he will be facing his friend and fellow compatriot, Janko Tipsarevic to battle out for a place in the final. Tipsarevic stood victorious against Somdev Devvarman of India in the quarter-final matchup on Friday, beating him 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
