As this is a major move we want to be sure we are heading to the right place in oz that will offer as much bricklaying work needed to make our move more comfortable. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  1. depends on where you are coming from

climate & weather will play a big part in where you live & if you like it here say what climate you live in now & i will give you a better answer to where in Aussie will suit you better

southen states will suit you better VIC/SA/tasmania in that order it gets very hot here so south is better as they get a winter there with colder weather (but still will get bloody hot in summer)up north is very humid & hot most of the year & hubby will have a hard time in the sun(so will you)

  2. North Queensland.  Townsville or Cairns.  Lots of building up this way.  Would stay away from mining towns the rent is just too dear eg approx $600 per week.

  3. hello from downunder

Well. Where to start. Australia hasn't got enough tradesmen so I expect when your husband starts work he will be in big demand. it is true the north of Queensland is in big demand but if you are going to rent for awhile up there the rents are very expensive because of the mines I think.

It is also very, very hot up there in summer.  You will appreciate a full time air conditioner if you move there.

Brisbane on the other hand does get hot and there is plenty of work also.

the north of Brisbane is a bit slower pace to the west or south. A new suburb called Northlakes has sprung up in a place called Mango Hill/Griffin.  In June 2006 to June 2007 there was a 22% increase in population there.  Everything is new. New primary school, new high school, new shops, library you name it, there is something there from birth to death.  It is about 10 minutes from the main train line north (Petrie station) and there is a bus bus I do not know the times. it is huge and a lot of english people have moved there. Some of them my friends and they love it.  There kids go to Grace College or Mueler College (private high schools) and are doing well.

Go to Google Earth and type in Northlakes or North Lakes, Mango Hill and have a look at the phenomional estate taking shapeGood luck and come on down.

  4. The building industry is slowly winding down here now, but we have heard there is alot of work in the Mackay area on the Queensland Coast.

  5. probably sydney or melbourne... there is always work there in th construction industry

  6. sydney, i recomend, i lived there for 20 yrs, there is an abundance of work of all kinds there, but maybe you should look at some aussie employment web sites, here's some links

  7. I don't know about the rest of the country, but I'm from Brisbane. Up north from Mackay to Emerald they really need tradesmen in the building industry. There are heaps of mines there and they can't get enough accomodation. I knew someone who was waiting nearly 3 years for a house to get built. I also know people in the industry who have moved up there because of the amount of work.

  8. I come from the Illawarra, Wollongong region about an hour south of Sydney.

The building industry down here is booming, my best mate is a brickie and a recent study showed that there is more then enough work to guarantee him a job in this area for the next 20 years. You're hubby shouldn't have a problem getting work down here. Brickies here get around $1000 per week after tax.

In terms of the area, its lovely. Far enough away from the huslte and bustle of the city yet close enough at the same time. Its a great area to raise kids and a friendly relaxed lifestyle. The weather is great, not too hot/not too cold.

Wollongong and Shellharbour are the main cities with majority of the work being around the Shellharbour area.

  9. Australia is hanging out for bricklayers and any tradesman at the mo.  If you went to the EXPO in the UK last week you could have got sponsorship and (maybe) help with moving costs  !!   (http://expo-australia.com)  The good news is there is one coming up in October.

Any major city in Australia you will NOT have any problems getting work for hubby, it all depends on what climate you want to live in.
