Migue Tabuena wishes to make a strong move in the Asian Tour Order of Merit
The fight for the top-60 spots in the Asian Tour Order of Merit is intensifying, as the second-last tournament on the Asian Tour, the Thailand Golf Championship, is set to begin this week in Bangkok.
The tournament will be played at the Amata Spring Country Club, featuring a total of 132 players from different parts of the world.
Philippine’s Miguel Tabuena, who currently holds the 78th position in the Order of Merit, knows that he has a battle to fight, if he has to earn his Asian Tour card for the upcoming season.
The Filipino missed out on the chance of securing his card last year, after finishing 62st in the Order of Merit. In 2011, the top-61 players to finish the season were allowed to retain their cards for the 2012 golf season.
Tabuena finished tied for the 39th in the 2011 edition of the Thailand Golf Championship, which was the last tournament on the 2011 Asian Tour roster.
However, his performance did not earn him enough money to make it into the top-61 in the list – he lost to Keith Horne, who finished 61st, by just US$250.
“It is a really big event for the guys trying to keep their card including myself because it is a one million dollar event. I played well here last year (finishing tied 39th) but unfortunately I didn’t save my card. Hopefully I can play better this week,”
said the 18-year-old.
“I’m not trying not to think about last year. It is part of the learning process. I want to go out in every tournament and give it my 110%. I want to make the cut first and see where I stand on the last two days,” added Tabuena.
Talking about the course conditions, he said that it will be difficult to create birdie chances in the tournament, because of the length of the course.
According to him, hitting the fairways on regular basis will play a key role in one’s success in the tournament.
In addition to that, players will have to complement their driving skills with a strong display of game with their putters. Otherwise, it will become really difficult for them to post even level-par scores.
