Miguel Angel Garcia collects knockout win over Bernabe Concepcion in seventh round - Boxing news
Miguel Angel Garcia, the American prospect with an undefeated winning streak, successfully retained his WBO NABO and NABF featherweight titles against Bernabe Concepcion, the current WBC Continental Americas featherweight title holder, by collecting a technical
knockout win in the seventh round.
The skirmish co-headlined the 10-bout pay-per-view put forth by Fernando Beltran of Promociones Zanfer, Ivan Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing, and Top Rank’s executive Bob Arum. The ring for the Saturday night extravaganza was set up at Coliseo Roberto
Clemente arena situated in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The event was headlined by the epic championship, ‘fight of the year’ dubbed bout between Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez. Miguel, who was entering in his career’s 28th bout, has never lost even a single engagement and has collected a whopping 23 of
his wins by knockout.
Miguel, well known as ‘Mikey Garcia’, entered the ring not only with the titles on the line but also placed his long invincible streak at stake. Ranked as world number seven, Angel, was defending his titles for the fourth consecutive time against a far more
experienced brawler, Bernabe.
Also known as the ‘Real Deal’ or ‘Kamaong Llave’ (Wrench Fist), Bernabe, has been in a total 35 brawls. He emerged victorious in 29 bouts and collected 15 of those wins by knockout. The Filipino number four, Concepcion, was coming from a split decision authoritative
win over Aaron Garcia, a bout in which he grabbed the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas featherweight gold.
Even before the bout started, Bernabe was seriously overshadowed by Miguel. Miguel was on a winning streak whereas Bernabe lost three of his last five encounters. Angel has two most important facets at stake, the belts and the streak, which gave him the
requisite motivation to annihilate Concepcion.
Bernabe, on the other hand, had nothing at stake except respect. Last but not the least, Angel had the 10cm reach advantage, an aspect that he used beautifully when brawling against the Filipino Bernabe. From the very beginning of the bout, Miguel did not
allow Concepcion to come close to him.
Angel threw well targeted, strong, powerful jabs from quite a distance that duly connected. Bernabe, despite all the efforts, ducking and trying to evade Miguel with agile footwork, was unable to defend himself against Miguel’s fist barrage.
In the seventh round Angel threw a whopping right hand that blurred Concepcion’s senses and he fell down on the ring floor. Bernabe did break the referee’s 10-count but Miguel did not give him much leverage as threw the final decisive wave of his knockout
fists.
At two minutes and 33 seconds the referee intervened since Concepcion was unable to defend. With this impressive victory, Miguel now has 28 wins in his account and 24 of them by knockout. Bernabe, on the other hand, has further tarnished his resume by receiving
career’s sixth defeat.
