Miguel Angel Jiménez breaks his leg during a ski accident
Miguel Angel Jiménez of Spain broke his leg in a ski accident, and is expected to miss the action for at least the first quarter of the 2013 golf season. While skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountain region, he caused his tibia to break.
Right after the accident, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he underwent a surgery just below his right knee. He is now expected to be discharged on Monday.
According to the doctors, Jiménez will not be able to return to the course for at least three to four months. In addition to that, he is likely to miss the first major golf championship of the season, the Masters Tournament.
“I was skiing in Sierra Nevada, I lost control and fell,” Jiménez was quoted as saying in a Tour statement. “I felt a huge stab of pain and I knew straight away I had broken something”.
“I broke the top of the tibia in my right leg, just where it meets the knee, and they put in two pins,” added the Spaniard.
Talking to the reporters, he expressed his disappointment in ruling out himself from a number of big events in the first quarter of the season.
The 48-year-old said that he was enjoying a great run of form and was in perfect shape to add more titles to his resume.
However, the incident will severely destroy his form and he will have to work really hard, in a bid to return to action after recovering from the injury.
The Spaniard recently became the oldest winner on the European Tour by winning the Hong Kong Open last month. Moreover, he was one of the four vice captains for the European Ryder Cup team this year.
“It will take three, four or five months to recover and be able to return to competition. I was playing very well but … these things happen in life,” said the 19-time European Tour winner.
Talking to the reporters at the hospital, he also told that he became a keen skier few years ago and knew the potential risks associated with the game.
