Miguel Angel Jimenez eager to repeat history to regain the ISPS Handa Wales Open this week
Miguel Angel Jimenez will be another grizzled veteran in the Spanish entourage at this week’s ISPS Handa Wales Open where he will be wrestling the field to post a strong finish on the latest European Tour event if not a win.
Coming out of a lacklustre season so far on the tour, Jimenez has not been able to win a title and has three top-ten finishes in the season with the highest coming in Korea, a joint fifth.
Jimenez has been fighting form vows since last year where he was not able to win a single title in his several appearances and has now dropped out of the top-20 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Winner of 21 professional titles in his stellar career, Jimenez has 18 European Tour victories on his belt and has done well in the team events in his career.
He surged to a yet another late rise in his career in the year 2010 when he landed three European Tour titles including the Omega Dubai Desert Classic where he landed the title on the Playoff against Lee Westwood.
He won the Alstom Open de France in July, beating Alejandro Cañizares and Francesco Molinari again on the Playoff and secured his last victory of the season at Omega European Masters defeating Edoardo Molinari by three strokes.
He secured a berth in the Ryder Cup and played brilliantly in the event at Celtic Manor Resort, guiding the European Team to a glorious victory.
Jimenez said, “I never miss this tournament, since I play the first time in 2005 and won. I always come to play here - it's nice a resort, it's a nice golf course. It's a great golf course and it's in superb condition this year. If the weather stays dry,
I think we'll have a nice week here”.
Jimenez is one of the many European Tour players who have not won a major title, despite of their quintessential record in the sport and while he is now turning 50 years of age in a few years, the grizzled Spaniard will switch over to the Senior Tour.
The non-chalant Jimenez has worked diligently throughout his grizzled career after he turned professional in the year 1982.
On the twilight of his career in mainstream golf, Jimenez has a short window to land a major title before he moves on to the Senior Tour.
