Miguel Angel Jiménez eyes glory at The Open Championship – Golf news
Miguel Angel Jiménez, who became the oldest winner on the European Tour last year, now has the chance of becoming the oldest major golf championship winner, as he holds the lead on day two of The Open Championship, on Friday, July 19, 2013.
Currently, Julius Boros holds the distinction of being the oldest winner of the major, as he won the US PGA Championship in a1968 at the age of 48 years.
Meanwhile, when a number of players struggled to play well on the course, Jiménez held his nerves and posted two birdies against as many bogeys to post an even-par score, which was enough to take a one-stroke lead over  Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he expressed his pleasure in getting into strong position to claim his maiden major title victory at Muirfield Golf Club, one of the difficult golf courses in the world.
"It would be very nice," he said. "I've been 25 years on the Tour, 19 victories on the Tour, and I would love to have a Major in my career, of course. Why not this one? I would love it. It's amazing, you know."
"Of course I feel pressure, anything that is important to you makes you feel pressure, but as long as I can handle it there is no problem,” he added.
Westwood, who has enjoyed top-10 finishes in nine of his last 17 major appearances, now hopes to finish the tournament on top of the leaderboard and claim the maiden major title of his career.
The tough playing condition did not have much effect on the Englishman, as he was six-under par for the round through 12 holes. That is the reason why three lost shots over the last six holes did not dampen his mood and he was pleased with his effort for 68 on day two.
"It's the biggest event of the year for me. Why not enjoy it out there? It's tough for everybody so smile your way through it," said the 40-year-old veteran star, who has 22 European Tour titles recorded to his name.
