Miguel Angel Jimenez kicks off with a brilliant start at the Open Championship
Miguel Angel Jimenez marveled the field with his superb comeback in the opening round of the Open Championship, which is taking place at the par-70 Royal St George's in Kent, England. The Spaniard composed a score of 66 to occupy
the third spot on the leaderboard for the day.
The 47-year-old golfer teed off from the front and reeled four birdies in the day without dropping a single shot. He demonstrated great control over the putter, when the wind started to show its treacherous colours on Thursday afternoon.
Jimenez lifted three titles last year, but he has been out of the limelight since the start of this season. He won the Omega Desert Classic, Alstom Open de France and Omega European Masters, which eventually earned him a spot in the
Ryder Cup. But in the wake of the current season, the veteran lost his momentum and took a hideout. However, the Open Championship turned out to be a proving ground for the player.
Through patience and a lot of practice, the player achieved the initial milestone of the season – a bogey-free scorecard.
Needless to say, the veteran was pleased at his achievement, “Yeah, well, I played very solid today all day long, hit the ball all day. The ball was not sitting very well. I had to lay up and I hit a very good shot with the wedge
and I saved par there. Apart from that I've been playing very well all day from green to tees, putting very well also, and that what you need to make pars on this course. As you see today with this wind, it makes it a little tricky because you need to be patient.”
Also, he mentioned that he was going to celebrate the great start with wine, cigars and shopping. He explained that he was a big fan of the Open Championship, therefore, he would get himself a shirt with the logo of the tournament
and enjoy his stay at the finest of the clubhouses in England.
Jimenez will tee off at 8.10 am, according to European Standard time, on Friday. Will he emulate his first round performance or will he slip down the leaderboard remains to be seen.
