Miguel Angel Jimenez lauds the Korean player’s success in the sport ahead of Ballantine’s Championship
Rampaging Spanish veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez will be back in action at the Ballantine’s Championship in Korea and given his non-chalant mood, the grizzled Spaniard is all set to challenge the sturdy field at the event.
Jimenez has a disappointing run so far in the current season but he is barely deterred by the loss and is hoping to bounce back at the scenic Blackstone Golf Club, near the Korean capital Seoul, from April 26-29.
Jimenez in particular showered his praise for the raging Asian players in general and the Korean players in particular, who will be hoping to utilise the advantage of the home turf.
He said, "Golf in Asia is developing all the time, and they seem to be producing more and more top players every year".
"They’ve got great golf courses and the fans always come out to watch, so I enjoy playing there and I’m looking forward to going back to Korea".
Jimenez lauded the achievements of the grizzled Korean players of the likes of Y.E Yang and his meteoric rise to stardom at the 2009 PGA Championship.
He further added, “Korea has lots of good players, especially Y E Yang. He is very strong mentally – he’s always very focused on what he’s doing. He showed that when he beat Tiger in the last round of the US PGA Championship in 2009”.
Despite a blazing career in the sport, the 48-year-old Jimenez has never gone over to win a major event.
He has won 21 professional wins and has played in as many as five Ryder Cup events, wining no less than three of them.
Jimenez is also the co-host of the Open de Andalucía on the Spanish circuit. His highest finish in a major event came in the year 2000, when he went over to post a high of joint second.
He has 18 European Tour victories and has also featured in the top-20 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Ballantine’s Championship will feature some of the raging giants of the European Tour of the likes of Open Champion Darren Clarke, Ross Fisher, Ian Poulter and Tom Lewis apart from many other leading golfers.
