Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder make winning combination – MLB Spring Training News
For the first time this spring, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder made a match winning combination to help Detroit Tigers secure a thrilling 7-6 win over New York Mets. Showing the depth and quality in their batting line-up, the Tigers emerged victorious
in a nail biting Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training sessions.
Fielder looked in outstanding touch on Wednesday, March 14th in Tigers’ 7-6 win as he drove Cabrera in twice, who was walked twice by the Mets. The left handed striker also hit a decisive two run home run off Mets’ starter Dillon Gee in the fourth
inning. He later had a single for the Tigers in a four run fifth inning.
"He hit behind (Ryan) Braun over in Milwaukee so he'll hit behind Cabrera," manager Jim Leyland said of Fielder. "We've got pretty good protection behind him in Delmon Young; he knocked in 100 runs the year before last (112 in 2010)."
"You can move Miggy (Cabrera) into the 3-hole and he has more at-bats per game and you can't pitch around him," Young said. "Victor (Martinez) did a great job hitting behind Miggy, but now you walk Miggy and you have a guy who has hit 50 home runs in his
career coming up behind him."
Tigers’ fans were hoping to see Cabrera-Fielder right from the start of spring training. Fielder, who agreed to a nine year $214 million deal earlier this year, is playing first base for the Tigers this season. Cabrera is expected to bat behind him to form
one of the most dangerous hitting combinations in American League this season.
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland, General Manager Dave Dombrowski and the fans will be very pleased with what they have seen from the dual so far this season. The Tigers were the winners of American League Central division last year. However, with added strength,
they will not be looking to settle for anything less than the World Series title in 2012. It till be interesting to see if the pair can make similar sort of plays during the regular season.
