Miguel Cabrera becomes second consecutive player from Detroit Tigers to win AL MVP – MLB News
Mike Trout may have had a better season in terms of WAR and stolen bases but it was Miguel Cabrera who claimed the American League Most Valuable Player Award on Thursday evening.
The slugging third baseman, who is also the first player to win the Triple Crown Award since 1967, is also the second consecutive Tigers’ MVP winner. Justin Verlander, Tigers’ hard throwing ace, won the MVP Award last season as he earned an incredible 24-5
record with 2.40 ERA and 250 strike-outs.
This year, it was his team-mate’s turn to show the baseball world the stuff he is capable. Although Cabrera has been performing really well for the last three to four years, none of his seasons were as good as the 2012 season as he hit .330 with 44 home-runs
and 139 RBI’s.
"Wow, wow, I don't believe it," Cabrera told the MLB Network was his initial reaction to hearing that he won. "I don't have the words to explain how excited I am right now.”
"I never expected I was going to win because Mike Trout had an unbelievable season. I'm very surprised," he further added.
"To me, baseball is about winning, not personal numbers," he said. "The most important thing is winning games. Bringing a championship to Detroit is our No. 1 goal."
"Trust me when I tell you, there is no flaw in Miguel Cabrera's season," Leyland said in an interview with a leading sports website.
He has a unique ability to up his game play under pressure and that is what helped the Tigers win their second straight American League Central Division title. The balloting was conducted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Thursday and Cabrera
received 22 first place votes.
Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels’ managed to take just six out of 28 possible votes. There were speculations that the outcome of the voting will be extremely close but Cabrera easily fended off Trout, who hit .326 with 30 home-runs and 83 RBI’s in the
2012 season. Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers finished third in the voting, reports a leading sports website.
