Miguel Cabrera’ biggest threat for AL MVP: Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera has an excellent chance to win this year’s American League Most Valuable Player Award. Cabrera has also become the first Tigers’ hitter to claim the Triple Crown Award in over 100 years.
However, winning Triple Crown Award does not guarantee him the AL MVP. The biggest threat to Cabrera’s AL MVP Award this season is Los Angeles Angels’ rookie Mike Trout.
Trout, who made his Major League Baseball debut this season, posted some impressive numbers to become a strong candidate for one of the most prestigious awards in the game. He started the season on a very bright note, driving in runs on a regular basis.
His ability to hit home-runs against the best in the business is what made him popular among Angels’ fans. By the end of June, Trout had already made inroads into the All Star Game.
Cabrera, on the other hand, started the season slowly. At the All Star Break, it was clear he was going to post another fine season but he never looked close to winning the Triple Crown Award. However, the hard hitting third baseman raised his game play
with each passing series.
He exploded in September though, hitting home-runs on almost every appearance. His heroic efforts in closing stages of the season helped him claim the Triple Crowd Award and the Tigers won the American League Central Division title for the second straight
season.
Cabrera ended the season with an excellent.330 average with 44 home-runs, 139 RBI’s and .999 OPS. Perhaps, the most impressive thing about his Triple Crown season was his consistency as he hardly missed any games.
In some ways, it is the consistency that separates him from his competitors. Not only is he an excellent hitter, Cabrera is also durable and reliable, which is vital at the highest level of baseball.
Trout hit .326 with 30 home-runs and 83 RBI’s in his rookie season with the Angels. His .963 OPS was also among the best in the American League. It will be interesting to see if he has done enough to beat Cabrera in the race for AL MVP.
