Miguel Cabrera claims his first AL MVP – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera claimed his first ever American League Most Valuable Player Award on Thursday and the time for debate is officially over. Cabrera faced a fierce competition from the Los Angeles Angels’ rookie Mike Trout, who
finished second in the voting results.
According to the balloting conducted by Baseball Writers’ Association of America, the hard hitting Cabrera took 22 out of 28 available first place votes. Trout came second with six votes and 281 points. Texas Rangers’ third baseman Adrian Beltre came third
with 210 points.
Justin Verlander received two fourth placed votes while Prince Fielder finished ninth with one fifth place vote and five sixth place votes. In an interview with a leading sports website, Cabrera said he did not have words to describe how happy he felt at
winning the prestigious award.
From his Twitter account, @RealPFielder28: "Congratulations to Miguel on a historic season. Well deserved. Ready to get back after it with ya and bring WS championship to Detroit next season. Boom!"
"I'm excited because he support me a lot and this year we support each other," Cabrera said. "Hopefully we can help our team to win the division and get to the playoffs again."
"Venezuela is going crazy right now," Cabrera said. "I got 100 calls, text messages. They can't wait to see me back in Venezuela. It's something a lot of people in Venezuela are going to remember. It's great."
Cabrera also became the successive Tigers to win the AL MVP after ace Verlander did so the last season. He is also the first Tigers’ third baseman to win an AL MVP since Hank Greenberg achieved the feat back in 1940.
Verlander supported his team Cabrera in the MVP all through the season. He even wore a T-Shirt saying, “Keep the MVP in Detroit”.
Fielder also congratulated his team-mate on winning the MVP. It is only the third time in Tigers history that players have won back-to-back AL MVP. Hank Greenberg won in 1944 and 1945. Catcher Mickey Cochrane and Hank Greenberg took home the hardware in
1935 and 1934.
