Miguel Cabrera could retire as Tiger, says Dave Dombrowski – MLB News

Without a shadow of a doubt, Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera is one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball right now. Just where Cabrera ranks among the great hitters is a question many fans have been asking for the last couple of months.
Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila is not too sure but he said something very enlightening about Cabrera.
However, what Avila said about Cabrera will solely depend whether he finishes his career with the Tigers. General Manager Dave Dombrowski is convinced that it is a realistic situation. Every Tiger loves what he does on the field, how he carries himself and
what he does for the Tigers off the field.
Under his current contract, Cabrera could stay in Detroit through till 2015 for $65 million. Cabrera will enter the free agency when he will be 32 years old, in his prime and arguably the finest hitters off all time. It will not be a surprise to anyone if
he ends up securing a deal more than $254 million deal Albert Pujols got from the Los Angeles Angels struck last winter.
“The situation will depend on the financial state of the Tigers — who already have committed long-term big bucks to Prince Fielder and Anibal Sanchez, and soon have decisions to make on stud starting pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer”,  Tony Paul
of detroitnews.com said.
“Ilitch, of course, isn't shy about spending big to stockpile stars — while most owners dealing with a mid-market and a modest television contract and ticket prices wouldn't do that. If Ilitch no longer is at the helm, and the Tigers do eventually meet their
so-called fiscal cliff under new ownership, they'll probably have to explore trading Cabrera before his current contract expires”, he added.
But the Tigers would do everything they can to retain him until his retires. After their success in the American League Central Division in recent years, Tigers’ financial state looks very solid. They are also committed to preserving their status of one
of the elite clubs in the American League. After taking care of the decision on starter Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, surely the Tigers would love to extend Cabrera’ contract.
