Miguel Cabrera homers as Detroit Tigers rout Oakland Athletics 6-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued to impress the critics as they thrashed the Oakland Athletics 6-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, September 19 in second game of their three match series.
Omar Infante provided Tigers with an excellent start as he doubled to left in the third inning to break the deadlock. Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta made useful contributions to extend the Tigers’ lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning.
Miguel Cabrera connected for a solo home-run in the seventh to give Tigers complete control of the situation. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander had another superb outing as he gave up just five hits in six scoreless innings to claim his 15th win
of the season.
"We played a couple good games against one of the hottest teams in all of baseball," Leyland said in a post game interview. "That's pretty good."
"We could see earlier in the inning that he was trying to stretch out his back, so I don't think the fall had anything to do with it," Oakland’s Manager Bob Melvin said of starter Brett Anderson. "We just checked him at that point and decided we didn't want
to go any farther with him."
Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera produced another masterful performance to help his side stay in the playoff race. His home-run helped the Tigers grab a much needed win on Wednesday.
In a post game interview, the hard hitting striker also talked about the possibility of Triple Crown Award. It will be interesting to see if Cabrera can deliver the goods consistently to give Detroit a chance to replace Chicago White Sox at the top of American
League Central Division standings table.
Having won 28 out of their last 36 games at Comerica Park, it seems Jim Leyland and his men have the perfect winning formula to win games at home. However, the Tigers must find a way to win the road series.
Kansas City Royals later delivered a 3-0 win against the White Sox that reduce their lead over Tigers to just two games. With 14 games still remaining, Tigers are still in the playoff race.
As the season winds down, the teams that have any possible chance of getting in to the playoffs are working extra hard to put in a good performance in the few remaining games.
