Miguel Cabrera homers as Detroit Tigers thrash Atlanta Braves – MLB Spring Training Recap
Miguel Cabrera looked in commanding form as he hit his first home run to help Detroit Tigers thrash Atlanta Braves 5-1 at the Joker Marchant Stadium, Lakeland Florida on March 7th in a Grapefruit League Clash of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Sessions.
Cabrera looked a bit out of sorts in his previous Spring Training appearances but he made the most of available opportunities on Wednesday to help the Tigers secure a comfortable win against Atlanta Braves.
The Braves, on the other hand, did not have enough depth and quality in their hitting line up as they struggled to convert some easy scoring opportunities during the contest. It will be interesting to see if they can bounce back from such a humiliating defeat.
Cabrera, who will be playing third base this season, hit a towering home run over the left field berm in Tigers’ 5-1 win over the Braves. The hard hitting striker did not have a lot of work to do at third base as he had only one ball hit towards him in the entire game.
"I don't ever worry about him hitting," Leyland said of the American League batting champion. "I want to see him get some action to get used to fielding the ball. I can't play him nine innings, and at the end of five innings he hasn't had many groundballs."
"He made a good play on a guy that can run," Leyland said. "It's only a tough play if you worry about making a perfect throw," said Cabrera, who played third base in his first four major league seasons. "I just tried to get to it and not worry so much about the throw."
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland was absolutely delighted to see Cabrera in action. Ryan Raburn also made a useful contribution with his bat as he earned a two run triple in Brandon Beachy’s four run inning. The Tigers have looked in terrific form since the start of Spring Training session. With Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Brennan Boesch, the Tigers will be a force to reckon with this season.
