Miguel Cabrera makes history, wins AL MVP – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera made history on Thursday as he edged Los Angeles Angels’ rookie Mike Trout in the voting for 2012 American League Most Valuable Player Award.
The balloting was conducted by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and Cabrera received 22 out of 28 first place votes to win the prestigious award for the first time in his Major League Baseball career.
Cabrera produced match winning performances for the Tigers last season as he hit .330 with 44 home-runs and 139 RBI’s. His ability to score runs late in the game helped the Tigers emerge victorious in several nail biting encounters. He became the first player
to win the Triple Crown Award in 1967.
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said, “I think when you do something that hasn’t been done in 40-some years, with everything (Cabrera) did down the stretch when we needed him the most. I was a little nervous about it, but to be honest with you, I just felt like
if this guy doesn’t get the MVP, then there should be no such thing as an MVP.”
"I'm not sure the debate is over, but we know that the election is over and frankly it was not as close as people anticipated," said BBWAA secretary/teasurer Jack O'Connell. "Don't be surprised if they declare a national holiday in Venezuela tomorrow."
Trout, on the other hand, hit .326 with 30 home-runs and 83 RBI’s. He displayed some top quality hitting skills in his rookie season with the Angels. Trout took six first placed votes compared to Cabrera’s 22.
Tigers’ hard throwing ace Justin Verlander finished eighth in the voting as he received two fourth placed votes. Detroit’ first baseman Prince Fielder came ninth in the voting.
Cabrera was very happy with the fact he was able to win his first ever MVP Award this season. It was no fluke though as he has been giving results more consistently than anyone else in the Tigers’ batting line-up. Surely, the hard hitting third baseman will
be looking to continue the good work in the upcoming to help the Tigers avenge their loss against the San Francisco Giants.
