Miguel Cabrera picking up form in spring as Opening day fast approaches
Lakefield, Florida, is where Miguel Cabrera is working out recently. The fabled Detroit Tigers’ star is hitting the right tempo and is believed to be gearing up for the 2011 Major League Baseball season. The slugger is developing his reflexes for the coming
matches and is tearing the rust off his legs in spring training.
Cabrera, who was involved in a controversial arrest following a DUI charge, took his time to kick off the training session with the club. With just three weeks left until the dawn of the Opening Day, Cabrera is making his mark on the Grapefruit League. The
slugger believes he is getting to the point of being on track and is not worried about the missed days.
"The first week, it was like getting in baseball shape," Cabrera said Thursday morning. "I think next week, I'll be ready."
Manager, Jim Leyland believes Cabrera is on track but he might regain form late in spring.
"I would say probably real late in the spring, he'll be right on cue," Jim Leyland said.
Cabrera’s display in batting practice has been impressive thus far. The slugger has been hitting the ball well towards the right field. Regardless of where they land, Detroit is taking a positive note of the development seeping through the camp.
"I think what I've seen in his at-bats is what I normally see," Leyland said, "except he's not ready. He's still in the process of getting himself in baseball shape."
His spring performance in Florida has not exactly been comforting. In a game on Wednesday, he was struck out twice. At the moment, the player has a tally of 4 – for – 23 in the Grapefruit League.
"I struck out on my pitch," Cabrera said, "but I feel better swinging the bat. I feel like I'm getting my rhythm back, making adjustments, keep getting better."
Though Cabrera was not scheduled to appear yesterday, he is bound to make his appearance tonight when he will take on the St. Louis Cardinals. His run in against Albert Pujols will be most enjoyed by the spectators.
