Miguel Cabrera shines as Detroit Tigers defeat Baltimore Orioles 9-1 – MLB Spring Training Review
Miguel Cabrera put in a brilliant performance as he two RBIs and three hits to help the Detroit Tigers humiliate the Baltimore Orioles 9-1 in the Grapefruit game on Sunday, March 13 at the Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida.
The Tiger completely dominated the game, as they came out aggressively against the struggling Orioles. Detroit has been playing tremendous baseball during the spring games, as they currently have the best record winning 12 out of 18. The Orioles are having
a difficult time as they have lost their eighth game and are currently 7-8.
Right-handed first baseman, Cabrera had a tremendous game as he managed to get two RBIs and got the team their first run in the opening inning against Orioles’ starting pitcher Brian Matusz.
The Orioles’ pitcher did not have a good day on the mound as he gave up four hits and three runs in just over three innings pitched. Matusz struggled with his accuracy and paid the price for it.
“The results -- not happy about the results. But I'm really happy about the process,” Matusz said. “I feel like I'm making some adjustments that I need to.”
On the other hand, Tigers’ pitcher Adam Wilk had a decent day as he pitched a scoreless three innings spell allowing only one hit. He managed to contain the Orioles’ offence and did not allow them to free up their arms for easy hits. This was Wilk’s first
start in spring training and he proved himself a worthy opener.
Tigers’ Casper Wells also had a superb day as he was able to get three RBIs and four hits during the game.
Recently, Cabrera has attracted a lot of negative media attention following his arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. However, this incident has not had any impact on his performance on the field.
"I'm starting to swing good. I'm concentrating on my swing," Cabrera said. "I'm working toward the season and the whole year."
Detroit’s short-stop Cale Iorg added two run to take the score beyond the reach of the struggling Orioles.
The only offence from the Orioles came from their short-stop James Hardy as he managed to hit a brilliant home-run off Tigers’ Charlie Furbush. However, the pitcher recovered nicely as he struck-out five in his three innings spell.
The Tigers once again showed that they are red-hot right now and quite possibly the team to beat during the spring training session. They have dominated their way to the top and are showing tremendous signs of what to expect from the team when the regular
season starts. It will be interesting to see how long their winning momentum will last.
