Miguel Cabrera shines as Detroit Tigers rout Chicago White Sox 5-3 in Game 2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers crushed the Chicago White Sox 5-3 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, September 11 in second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After losing in the series opener, the Tigers needed to regroup themselves and fight back in Game 2 and that’s exactly what they did on Tuesday evening to stay in the playoff race.
With their win, Jim Leyland and company also closed down the gap between themselves and Chicago to just two games. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can take a win in their next two games to tie for the first place on American League Central Division
standings.
Starting pitcher Doug Fister produced a magical performance as he gave up just two hits in seven sharp innings to grab his ninth win of the season. Credit should be given to Fister for the way he handled pressure in a must win game. Relief pitchers Joaquin
Benoit and Jose Valverde continued the good work to help Detroit secure a much needed win.
"I wasn't trying to do too much; that was the biggest thing for me. I was just trying to stay inside myself and let the defense work," said Fister, who retired the last 14 batters he faced. "That was the name of my game tonight."
"We've been pitching very good for a while. Tonight, we did muster a few runs; it's not like we tore the cover off the ball, but we got enough. Our pitchers were pretty darn good," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said after his team snapped their four game losing
streak.
After the White Sox took an early 2-0 lead, Austin Jackson connected for a two run home-run to left centre in the fifth inning to level the score 2-2. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera hit his 36th home-run of the season to help Tigers come back from
behind to claim a vital 3-2 lead. Alex Avila single to right in the eighth and Andy Dirks earned an RBI single to right to ensure Tigers reach home safely.
