Miguel Cabrera shines as Detroit Tigers rout Oakland Athletics 12-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers showed great composure and character to come out of the slump as they annihilated the Oakland Athletics 12-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, September 18 in the opening game of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer put up a decent show as he gave up just two hits and a run while striking-out four batters. Relief pitcher Darin Downs was awarded with the win after he pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to help his side take complete control of
the situation.
Brayan Villarreal, Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Luis Marte combined to pitch four plus solid innings to keep Oakland on the defensive.
"I didn't have any pain in my shoulder -- it was just like my arm was dead," said Scherzer who looked a bit uncomfortable on the mound. "MRI came back negative. All the structural -- it's all good."
"Just wasn't executing pitches the way I usually do," said Oakland’s starting pitcher A.J. Griffin in a post game interview.
Miguel Cabrera put Tigers on the board with a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning. Jhonny Peralta, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hit back-to-back home-runs to extend Tigers lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning.
Austin Jackson doubled to left in the sixth inning. Quintin Berry added a double to deep right and Cabrera hit his second home-run of the game to ensure Tigers reach home safely.
"Our job is to win games. There's no talk about personal numbers," Cabrera said. "Hopefully we can get a good winning streak."
"That's a hard thing to do. You've got to be lucky," Cabrera said. "Hopefully we get lucky in our division and win more games."
Detroit Tigers, who lost to the Chicago White Sox in their previous game, used their home conditions superbly on Tuesday evening to stay in the playoff race. Right now the Tigers are placed second on the American League Central Division standings table.
It seems Tigers’ best chance of making it to the playoffs will be to grab one of the American League Wild Card spots. The Tigers will be trying hard to secure a playoff spot, as they have proven their aggressiveness as they humiliated the Athletics.
