Miguel Cabrera unanimously voted Tiger of the Year – MLB News Update
According to the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, Miguel Cabrera has been unanimously declared a winner of Tiger of the Year Award.
It seems Tigers hard hitting third baseman needs to make room in an already overflowing awards cabinet after earning another prestigious award. Earlier, Cabrera shared the Silver Slugger Award with the first baseman and team-mate Prince Fielder.
The source claimed that all 25 votes for Tiger of the Year Award were taken by Cabrera, who has won this award on three previous occasions, alternating the title with team-mate Justin Verlander for the past five years.
Only two other players have won Tiger of the Year Award twice since it was established in 1965 - Alan Trammell (1980, 1987-1988) and Cecil Fielder, who won three straight from 1990 to 1992.
Cabrera played a key role in Detroit Tigers’ American League Central Division winning campaign in 2012. He did not show any signs of slowing down in the playoffs either, leading the Tigers to a World Series appearance for the second time in seven years.
He also made his seventh All Star Game appearance and claimed the prestigious Triple Crown Award.
“I’ll show it to my friends, my family,” the Detroit Tigers’ third baseman said Monday in a press conference, thanking his friends and family for their support.
“I think it’s going to be something special for my kids. ... It’s going to be a good story for my grandkids,” Cabrera further added.
Cabrera became the first hitter to win the Triple Crown Award since 1967. Overall, he hit .330 with the bat, 44 home-runs and 139 RBI’s. He also led the American League in slugging (.606), total bases (377), extra base hits (84), OPS (.999) and ranked second
in hits and runs.
The Hank Aaron Award, the Luis Aparicio Award, a Silver Slugger and Sporting News and Players Choice Player of the Year are the other awards that Cabrera has already claimed this offseason. Cabrera is also a strong candidate for the American League Most
Valuable Player Award, which will be announced in the next week.
