Welterweight title holder miguel cotto, will be fighting Alfonso S. Gomez, but unlike what i thought, boxrec.com says that he has also planned a fight in July against Ricardo Mayorga who is coming off a win over fernando vargas, that fight would be good but he wouldnt last with cotto, I thought that cotto would fight the winner on the undercard who is margarito or cintron. But judging that the fight with mayorga is official is it a good move and who will win and why?

  1. I don't know if it is the best move but I'm going to love watching that fight! I think he just wants to stay busy. It is scheduled for July and the Gomez fight is in April  so maybe he is just staying active and going to fight the big fight the others were talking about in Sept-Nov time frame. It is a good move in that they are winnable fights and well known opponents so they will generate money but I also think Mayorga may be dangerous if taken lightly as he possesses power. We shall see....thanks for the heads up!

  2. There are so many fights that boxrec has posted that have never happened, so don't always believe them, its a good tool for boxing fans, buts its not always accurate.  If Cotto and Mayorga did fight, it would be entertaining while it lasted, but at this stage of Mayorga's career, I don't think he could last more than 5 rounds with Cotto.  Cotto is too young, strong, skilled, and hungry for Mayorga, and he is one of if not the best body puncher in the game, and that is why I would pick him to win.  I also thought that Bob Arum was going to match Cotto (as long as he wins against Gomez) with the winner of Cintron-Margarito 2, but then he started talking with Don King about a Mayorga fight.  It is still no where near final yet, so Cotto still could face either three of the fighters, but remember that even though Mayorga is past his prime, he always gives a good show and is always able to generate interest in a fight with another big name.

  3. don't believe everything in  boxrec ,  some of the info on fighters height reach and even record are flawed

Arum has expressed that After Gomez Cotto will face the winner of Cintron , Margarito  and then maybe Mayorga.

  4. I could have sworn that Cotto-Gomez winner would face the Cintron-Margarito winner. I haven't heard anything about any changes and I don't rely too much on boxrec.com's future scheduling, especially when it's two fights ahead.

Anyway, to answer the questions, I don't think it would be a great move for Cotto to fight Mayorga, when there's something much better, like taking the winner of the Cintron-Margarito bout. It would be a chance to Cotto to earn at least two of the welterweight belts. A win over an aging Mayorga wouldn't mean too much, in my opinion. Cotto would simply have another notable name on his resume, but no new title.

I think Cotto would crush Mayorga, just like Trinidad and De La Hoya crushed him.

  5. I dont think its a good move at all for Cotto to fight the cigar smoking chomp Mayorga. He should be fighting someone that will put up a better fight and is further up along the ranks. In all honesty he should be fighting Mayweather. To  our dismay the King of Showboating is too busy chasing  De La Hoya and his money.

  6. Mayorga does not deserve a shot with cotto... cotto deserves mayweather, margarito, or de la hoya... no one else.. there is rumors he will fight margarito if everything goes right (cotto beats gomez & margarito beats cintron = margarito vs. cotto @ New York)....   but there is rumor floating around that mayorga is gonna fight cotto.. if cotto fights mayorga people are going to think he got his wins easy, just like how mayweather is getting easy fights... but if it did happen, cotto will win for sure.... mayorga talks a lot and will fuel cottos rage... cotto is just faster, stronger, and more feared... i see him winning easily...
