Miguel Cotto Vs. Alfonso Gomez?

Question

Why?? Miguel Cotto beat a superstar boxer in Sugar Shane Mosley(On PPV I might add) BUT, his next fight is against a fighter from the Contender whose most notable fight was against a basically retired Gotti.

Shouldnt he have faced Margarito, Cintron, or h**l, even Hatton?? Personally, I think he should be guaranteed the winner of DLH and Money May Part 2.

What is wrong with the people in charge of the Welterweight division?? They have the most beefed up division BUT, are ruining it by not giving Cotto a chance to be a superstar.

I also was quite disappointed when I heard of this fight being made, but I'll give Cotto a break because he just beat Zab Judah in a grueling match and he beat Shane Mosley in a tough, competitive fight.  His fight with Alfonso Gomez is being seen as a tuneup for the winner of Cintron/Margarito 2 or even possibly Ricardo Mayorga (who at this stage would be less competive than Gomez in my opinion).  Hopefully Cotto is taking Gomez serious and not looking ahead to the bigger names because if he does he could be in the same boat as Paul Williams after losing to Carlos Quintana.  However, I don't see that happening and I think Cotto will knock him out.  I too want to see Cotto face Mayweather, but it won't happen this year because Floyd will fight De La Hoya in a rematch in September and he won't fight again later this year.  I really hope that by next year we will have Mayweather defend his championship against his true number one contender, Miguel Cotto (assuming neither loses).

The only reason Cotto is fighting Gomez is that DLH and Maywether didn't want to fight Cotto.

When Maywether beat DLH, he was asked if he would fight Cotto and at that time he said he was going to retire. Not even a month passed by when he accepted to fight Hatton. After the Hatton fight he was asked of he would now fight Cotto, because that was the fight that everybody wanted to see. His response was that he was going to take a long vacation (probably a year a 2) and the he would decide what was going to be the next step. What a vacation!!! he already has schedule DLH-Maywether 2 for this year. Are you afraid Maywether???

When asked after the fight with Maywether if he was going to retire (his wife had requested the retirement) he said that he makes the boxing decisions in the family. But when DLH was asked if he would fight Cotto he said that his wife (which is puertorican) didn't want him to fight again a boxer from Puerto Rico.  Cheap excuses DLH!!!!

Cotto will fight the winner of Margarito-Cintron in June or July and probably have another fight by the end of the year. I just hope that Cotto continues to win to see what other excuses will come from the winner of DLH-Maywether 2

jesus christ man cotto just fought mosley he fought judah he is going to fight margarito after gomez what in the world do mean the division isnt getting him fights??!! so what if he gest an easier fight than before you cant expect a fighter to fight hard fights every single fight if he does that he will lose not because the other guy is better but because of the accumulation of strong fights. look at vargas and taylor they got fed to the wolves pretty quickly taylor did a better job than vargas with the wolves i may also add. besides champions are supposed to give lower classed boxers a shot thats what called a mandatory in boxing. the welter divison is the best division in boxing and slowly but surely all fighters are getting to fight one another to see who is the best. In 2009 cotto will face mayweather to see whos the best of the division once and for all as for cintron, margarito, williams they are definitedly not the best in the division. Sugar shane can beat all them pretty easily.

I like Gomez, he seems like a nice guy, and wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot - he got a nice payday against Gatti, but this is a waste, Cotto is one of the 2 or 3 biggest stars in the sport right now in the most stacked division....there are 7 or 8 fights everyone would rather see him in; Cintron, Margaito, (I wouldn't mind seeing him against Zab or Mosley again), etc.

This could be a pretty entertaining fight, Gomez doesn't do much but stand in the pocket, but he doesn't have real power but he's tough.  Cotto will stop him in the middle rounds (TKO 9).

Cotto will win the fight

Some one here, said Cotto would lose, if he fight back to back hard fights. Everyone one want Mayweather to do the same. Same thing happen to banks off the contender, is going to happen to gomez. To get the record straight. Mayweather offered Cotto a fight, after the Gatti fight. Guess who turn it down? Cotto camp. If Cotto camp was smart, they would have him to fight more boxer than brawlers. That would get him prepared to fight mayweather. Everyone know Cotto is the Puertorican camp right now. I like to see him against Cintron.
