Miguel Cotto beats Ricardo Mayorga – Boxing news
Miguel ‘Angel’ Cotto has defeated dangerous hitter Ricardo Mayorga in an interesting 12-round 154-pound championship bout on Saturday, 12th March, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
It was for the first time Miguel Cotto was defending his WBA Super World light middleweight title against former WBA and WBC welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga.
Both the fighters were standing after 11 non-stop blistering and punching rounds but just before few seconds of last round the bout was called off because Ricardo Mayorga’s hand was injured.
The former WBC – WBA Super World welterweight and WBC light middleweight champion, Ricardo Mayorga after getting defeated by Cotto has updated his professional record as follows. Nicaragua’s national Ricardo Mayorga fought 38 fights in total. He won 29 fights
including 23 wins by KO’s, total 7 losses including 5 by knockout and 1 draw.
Mayorga should definitely analyse his performance critically because he is going to end up his career very soon being grown old and has lost now lost five of his last nine fights.
However, Puerto Rico’s national Miguel Angel Cotto retained his WBA World Light middleweight title and after this fight he has now improved his record as follows. He has fought 38 fights in total with 36 wins, 29 KO wins and 2 losses of game and no draw.
Miguel Angel Cotto’s first loss was against Antonio Margarito on 26th July, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada in which he lost his WBA Welterweight title as a result of being technical knocked out in the 5th round
at 2:05.
However, another loss came into his way from Philippine’s number one pound-for-pound boxer Manny Pacquiao just after winning his couple of fights against Michael Jennings and Joshua Clottey. He lost his WBO Welterweight title against Manny Pacquiao but as
a result of winning technical knockout decision over Yuri Foreman at the Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York brought the ownership of WBA World Light Middleweight title for Miguel Cotto.
This time in his first defence of WBA World Light Middleweight title against Ricardo Mayorga, Miguel Angel Cotto successfully won a technical knocked out decision over Ricardo Mayorga in the last round. No doubt, it was really a smart work done by Cotto
but the boxing fans are not so impressed because he allowed Mayorga to survive until the last round and primarily the reason that his punching power was not enough to finish of an aging former champion.
Cotto landed many clean shots to the body and head of Mayorga several times. No doubt Cotto tries to dominate Mayorga throughout the fight but it seems he was actually not trying to hurt Mayorga badly as he often tries to do at welterweight or light welterweight
division. Mayorga put himself on the ropes inviting Cotto to take him into the fight. Just few seconds before the finishing of 12th round, Cotto delivered a vicious left hook to the Mayorga as a result he went to the canvas.
Cotto is great powerful, skilful, speedy and very accurate and stick to his techniques. He has the ability to upset the rivals with one single punch but not now at light middleweight division. But now he has lost his speed and power moving up to light middleweight
division because his power and speed will not be enough to face big names in that light middleweight division.
Cotto was very happy to win this fight he expressed his wish to face Antonio Margarito again so that he can prove to the world that his defeat was an accident.
