A controversial bout at New York’s Yankee stadium saw Miguel Cotto crowned WBA light-middleweight champion, his third different weight-class world championship.

The controversy reined when champ Foreman slipped twice in the seventh round injuring his damaged knee. His corner threw in the towel in the eighth but it was waved off by referee Arthur Mercante Jnr, who forced the two fighters to come out for the ninth round.
