Miguel Cotto defeated by Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout in Madison Square Garden – Boxing News
Puerto fight sensation Miguel Cotto got a taste of loss in front of his fans in the Madison Square Garden. Trout, who was an unknown fighter, shocked the world by defeating the former welterweight titlist via unanimous decision.
The fight went unexpectedly thrilling, as Trout made it a mark to keep Cotto behind. It was without a doubt an upset for Cotto, who was expecting Trout to be an inferior opponent.
“All I wanted was a chance,” said Trout. “That's all I asked for.”
Right from the start, Trout worked on Cotto, roughing him up. The unbeaten American made it a mark to retain his unbeaten streak and his 154-pound title.
Trout now stands with 26 wins and 0 losses whereas Cotto stands with 37 wins and 4 losses. By the end of the fight, it was Cotto who was battered and all swollen, while Trout seemed like he could go on for a few more rounds.
This was Cotto’s second loss following his loss to undefeated WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“I hope they bring me back to New York. I loved fighting in the Garden,” Trout added.
Two of the judges scored the fight as 117-111 for Trout, while the third one scored it 119-109.
It should be noted here that this was Cotto’s first ever defeat in New York. He was the undefeated champion in the New York fight scene but no more.
“I've been preparing for this fight my entire life. Fighting someone like Miguel Cotto is a dream come true for someone like me waiting for their big moment. I had to show him I was the biggest guy and push him back a couple of times. I kept pushing him
back to show he had no advantage there,” said Trout.
For now, Trout is excited as he has earned the respect he thought he always deserved. Defeating Miguel Cotto in his ‘hometown’ was not an easy job, especially when half of the crowd moved out after the initial rounds. No one could see Cotto being battered
but Trout made sure he puts Cotto at place.
