Miguel Cotto no more in Manny Pacquiao’s list of possible opponents – Boxing News
Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto, who was previously in Manny Pacquiao’s list of possible opponents, is heading towards a fight against Austin Trout. Cotto will face Trout at Madison Square Garden in New York on December 1, according to Cotto.
“I'm trying to put this legacy together and this is what I needed. I am ecstatic right now,” said Trout for the fight to ESPN.com. “I get to check off a few things on my bucket list with this fight. I get to fight in the Garden, I get to fight a superstar
in the Garden, and I get to fight on HBO, if that's where this fight is.”
Miguel Cotto was being considered as a possible opponent for Filipino Manny Pacquiao but no more.
“We are teaming up with Golden Boy for aspects of the promotion, but Miguel doesn't have any promotional ties to any company and that's the way it's going to remain,” revealed Cotto’s attorney Gabriel Penagaricano to ESPN.com.
“We explored the Pacquiao fight. We discussed it for several days but there was no agreement. The weight was an issue and we didn't agree on all relevant aspects of the deal, so at the end, there was no agreement. After that didn't work out, we had a had
a short list of candidates and Miguel picked Trout,” said Gabriel regarding Cotto’s possible rematch against Manny Pacquiao.
Manny Pacquiao is currently scheduled to fight on November 10 but his opponent is yet to be decided. According to Top Rank’s Bob Arum, promoter for Pacquiao, the Pac-man is still unsure as to who he wants to face. With Cotto’s drift, Pacquiao is now left
with just Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley to select from.
Chances are that Pacquiao might opt for a rematch against American unbeaten fighter and the now WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. However, Arum is trying his level best to push Pacquiao towards a fourth match against Juan Manuel Marquez. Since Pacquiao
has promised fans, he will bring the welterweight title home, there are chances the Filipino will go towards a match against Bradley.
