Miguel Cotto reveals rematches with Pacquiao and Mayweather were out of picture – Boxing News
Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto spoke about his rematch options against Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, asserting that none of the fighters was willing to go for it. Hence, according to Cotto, he went for a match against Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout, who
won a vacant belt in February last year.
“When rematches with Floyd or Manny went out of the picture, the best option was Austin Trout, so we picked Austin Trout to fight,” said Cotto in an interview with ESPN.com. “He's a world champion, he's undefeated. He's a dangerous fighter and he was the
right opponent for me, but I'll still walk out of the ring with another belt.”
It should be noted here that Cotto’s choice of facing Trout was considered absurd by most analysts, as Trout is not a very known fighter. However, Cotto defends his decision saying Trout is a great fighter and it would be a close fight between the two.
“In 12 years [as a professional], I never think I am going to reach those things -- all those titles, all the victories -- but I am pretty happy and I will work hard to be champion again on Dec. 1. I'm happy about this fight. I am going to be in New York,
my second home, in front of a huge Puerto Rican and Latin crowd, fighting for them, fighting for my country and fighting for myself,” said Cotto while comparing himself with Filipino fight sensation Manny Pacquiao.
For now, Cotto believes he has done it all in his career and that it is time for him to dictate terms. Cotto also spoke of the ‘$13 million offer’ made by Bob Arum, according to the Hall of Fame promoter. According to Cotto, Arum never made him such an offer,
instead he offered him the same amount he offered him the same proposal he did back in 2009.
For now, Cotto thinks it is best for him to face Trout. According to him, going to a lower weight to fight Pacquiao would have been tough for him and he would have lost once again.
