Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout announced – Boxing News
Speculations regarding Puerto Rican fight sensation Miguel Cotto have finally ended. The former welterweight titlist will be facing Austin Trout, unbeaten world champion, on December 1 at the Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan. The event ‘Showdown’
was announced yesterday at the El Museo del Barrio Museum in East Harlem NYC.
Miguel Cotto currently stands with 37 wins, 3 losses and 30 knockouts in his portfolio, whereas his opponent Austin Trout stands with 25 wins, 0 losses and 14 knockouts in his portfolio. Surprisingly, Cotto has selected a less known opponent this time, unlike
his recent opponents such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.
The event will be promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in collaboration with Cohen Promotions. It will be aired live on Showtime Championship Boxing.
“The fans here make me proud of the Puerto Rican heritage in New York,” said Cotto at the press conference. I’m not coming here to talk a lot. The camp just began two weeks ago. I’m going do the same as always. I’m going to train hard to beat my opponent
and be champion of the world.”
Cotto has headlined eight cards at the Madison Square Garden, making him one of the most popular fighters for New York. On the other hand, Trout, hailing from Las Cruces, New Mexico, won the vacant WBA junior middleweight title in 2011 in Mexico. He has
fought three title defence fights to date, with his last one being against Delvin Rodriguez. He won the fight via unanimous decision.
“I’ve been in hostile waters before down in Mexico and it gave me experience for this fight. I have two things in this sport right now – my belt and my undefeated record and I plan to keep both of them,” said Trout.
Cotto is the favourite for the fight, even though Trout holds the height and reach advantage. The Puerto Rican fighter is well known in New York and holds a huge fan base. For Cotto, this will be a test of his career. After losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
earlier this year, the Puerto Rican has damaged his brand to quite an extent. This might be his chance to improve his record and his rapport.
