Miguel Montero looking to sign long term deal with Arizona Diamondbacks - MLB News
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ talented catcher Miguel Montero is showing some great enthusiasm for a longer contract with the franchise after recently agreeing on a potential new one year deal worth $5.9 million on Tuesday.
“We're open to listen," Montero said. "We're just going to listen and see where we're at. And if it works out, it works out, and if it doesn't work out right now, for sure they're going to be my first option in the offseason."
Montero’s this comment is directly linked to the early argument between his agent and Diamondbacks, who earlier were reluctant to take the final decision with less money on their respective ends.
Miguel's agent had asked the Diamondbacks management to for $6.8 million; however, the Diamondbacks were stubborn to give Montero a $5.4 million one year contract.
In the meanwhile, this issue has now resolved when both sides agreed on a $5.9 million agreement before any salary arbitration hearing.
"It feels so nice," Montero said of having the issue settled. "I feel relieved and happy to get it done, man. I can't wait to get to Spring Training and start playing. That's the fun part. That's what it's all about. We're going to have a good team again this year."
Later, after Tuesday, Montero also expressed in the media that this is his great desire to play with the Diamondbacks for a longer period of time.
According to his current contracts details, following the 2012 Major League Baseball season, Montero will be eligible to file for free agency. Diamondbacks’ management and Montero recognise this fact and will likely set a potential goal for their future relationship before he join hands with any other MLB team. The Diamondbacks know the importance of a good catcher in the team to achieve productive results and they will certainly sign Montero again for some more years.
Keeping an eye of Montero’s last season performance where he played consistent achieving .282 hitting average along with 18 home-runs, 86 RBIs and .351 OBP, he certainly has huge chance to get an extension in near future.
