Miguel Montero’s double RBIs helps Arizona Diamondbacks rout San Diego Padres, 6-1 – MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ catcher Miguel Montero had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-2 and hit two RBIs in the Diamondbacks’ 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field, Arizona, on May 17.
Montero was a little shaky with his fielding as he threw out only four runners in 19 attempts during the current season. Speaking to reporters, he said, “It's been rough. Your attitude gets a little frustrated when you aren't throwing many guys out. I work
on it every day, man. Probably been working too much, I would say.”
The game was tied in the first inning as both the teams added one run and moved the score-board 1-all. Chris Denorfia drove a shot for a triple towards centre-field position and posted a run on the sacrifice fly of Jason Bartlett. On the other side, Kelly
Johnson added a single run for the Diamondbacks in the first inning. The second and third innings passed without a score for both the teams.
The Padres missed the run-scoring opportunities in the second inning when Eric Patterson tripled to centre and Rob Johnson failed to score a run at the plate. The Diamondbacks went ahead in the fourth inning with 2-1 when Montero hit a two-out double and
Justin Upton scored a run off left-field position.
The Diamondbacks’ Manager Kirk Gibson was pleased with the performance of Montero. He said, “That's the Miguel Montero approach. He'll pull some balls (to right) for sure, but in general it's left field, left-centre.”
No score was added in the fifth inning from either side. Gerardo Parra singled off the right-centre field in the sixth inning against the Padres’ reliever Cory Luebke to extend their lead, 4-1. The seventh inning again went in favour of the Diamondbacks
when Stephen Drew and Montero both hit RBI singles to give their club a final 6-1 lead. The last two innings were score-less due to impressive throws of the pitchers.
Daniel Hudson also played a crucial role in this convincing win of the Diamondbacks. He pitched seven innings and gave away one run on eight hits with one earned run. Hudson struck out six batters and allowed two walks.
