Miguel Olivo shines as Seattle Mariners overpower Tampa Bay Rays, 9-6 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ catcher, Miguel Olivo played brilliantly as he went 1-for-4 and struck a three-run homer in the Mariners’ 9-6 win against Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field, Seattle on June 5.
First inning went score-less for both sides as the batters got out on effortless pitches. Ben Zobrist hit out to left-field at the top of the first while Justin Smoak grounded out to short-stop. The Rays got off the mark with a single run and took a 1-0
lead in the second inning when Sean Rodriguez scored one run on the drive of Kelly Shoppach towards left-field.
During the third inning, the Rays added two runs while the Mariners smashed three runs to tie the game 3-3. B.J. Upton singled to centre-field and Zobrist posted one run. The second run for the Rays was taken by Upton when Felipe Lopez doubled to deep right-field.
On the other hand, Ichiro Suzuki tripled towards deep right-centre while Carlos Peguero and Greg Halman both contributed two runs for the Mariners. Brendan Ryan hit a sacrifice bunt and Suzuki added a tie run at the bottom of the third inning.
The batters failed to put any run from fourth to sixth inning in front of exemplary pitches. Erik Bedard pitched in a perfect line as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 3.46 and gave three runs on eight hits including three earned runs. He struck-out
seven batters and did not allow a walk on his 111 pitches.
Bedard said, “After the little rough start, it was nice to settle down and get some innings for the team. Early on I was just missing a little bit and the more innings I threw, the better it got.”
The Mariners went ahead 5-3 by adding two runs during the seventh inning. Adam Kennedy and Peguero posted two runs on the triple-run shot of Halman off the deep right-field. In the eighth inning, the Rays contributed three runs while the Mariners scored
four runs to end the game 9-6.
Johnny Damon, Zobrist and Matt Joyce each posted one run for the Rays while Jack Cust, Jack Wilson and Kennedy singled on a three-run homer (375 feet) off Olivo towards left-field to extend the Mariners lead. No score was posted in the ninth inning.
