Miguel Pupo and Alain Riou victorious in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The surfing action continued at Ribeira D’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Portugal, with the seventh and eighth heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 48 (Round 2).
Brazil’s Miguel Pupo emerged triumphant in the seventh heat to qualify for the next round, while his compatriot, Caio Ibelli finished second to remain alive in the event as well. France’s Tim Boal and Venezuela’s Jonathan Gonzalez rounded out the bottom-two
positions to get eliminated from the competition.
The eighth heat was won by French Polynesia’s Alain Riou, while Brazil’s Jesse Mendes took the runner-up place. Portugal’s Vasco Ribeiro and Brazil’s Ruda Carvalho finished in third and fourth positions respectively to get removed from the event title race.
For a long time, there has been a buzz in the surfing community that Brazilians are taking over. Pupo, who already has a Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event win to his name this season, simply added to the fears by dominating the four-way
battle on Wednesday.
Scoring a spectacular 8.17 off his first wave and following it up with an impressive 7.47-point wave, Pupo finished with a two-wave total of 15.64 points and comfortably walked away with the win.
Ibelli remained the second most impressive surfer during the heat and successfully extended his life in the competition by scoring 5.50 and 5.63 points off his two waves to clinch second positions.
Both Boal and Gonzalez had remained pretty impressive on the first day of the competition, but the second day did not turn out to be good for them. The French finished third with a heat-total of 8.93 points, while the Venezuelan finished last after earning
8.30 points only. Both the surfers were eliminated from the event title race.
In the very next heat, Riou continued to look impressive by making yet another notable run to collect his second victory of the competition. Just a few minutes into the heat, he caught a wave to score 7.60 points to move into the lead. Not quite finished
yet, he added 6.87 points to his account, finishing with a two-wave total of 14.47 points. The score remained unbeatable and eventually earned him a comfortable victory.
Mendes and Ribeiro battled it out for the second position to stay alive in the competition by qualifying for the next round. The Brazilian scored 6.10 and 6.77 points off his two waves to reach a heat-total of 12.87, while the local-surfer finished with
12.67 points.
As a result, it was Mendes walked away with a satisfied smile on his face, while Ribeiro found his name getting added to the elimination list. Carvalho, who finished with a heat-total of 10.66, joined him on the list.
