Miguel Pupo and Jay Quinn qualify for Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011 quarter-finals
The surfing action continued with the third and fourth heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 12 (Round 4) at the Ribeira D’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Portugal, on Friday, June 17th.
Brazil’s Miguel Pupo continued his winning momentum in the third heat by defeating Australia’s Davey Cathels and Brazil’s Caio Ibelli to advance to the quarter-finals. Cathels and Ibelli now faced a do-or-die situation in Round 5.
The fourth heat saw New Zealand’s Jay Quinn collect yet another victory to secure a slot in the quarter finals. Australia’s Julian Wilson and his compatriot Dion Atkinson rounded out the second and third position, consequently heading to Round 5 for survival.
The result of the third heat came as no big surprise. Pupo was undoubtedly the strongest competitor in the three-way battle and the fate of the heat simply confirmed it.
The Brazilian clinched the lead early in the battle by catching a wave to score 6.77 points off it. He later locked another wave to throw down a combination of impressive manoeuvres to earn 8.10 points for the effort and move to a two-wave total of 14.87
points. The score eventually carried him off to victory, sending him directly to the quarter-finals.
Cathels scored 6.17 and 6.37 points off his two waves to finish with a heat-total of 12.54 points. Ibelli remained the most unimpressive during the 30-minute battle. His two best scores of 4.03 and 3.00 got him to a heat-total of 7.03, putting him in last
place.
Ibelli clearly needed to up his game if he intended to stay alive in the competition, as his performance during Round 4 was quite alarming for both him and his fans.
The fourth heat saw Quinn add yet another convincing victory to his name. The New Zealander was clearly on a rampage in the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event.
Asserting his outstanding form, Quinn locked a good wave to score an amazing score of 8.27 off it and lead the competition. He immediately extended the lead to seal the fate of the heat with a second-wave score of 8.70 to finish with a heat-total of 16.97
points. He could have hardly hoped for a better way to earn the quarter-final slot.
Wilson was one of the few surfers who had remained impressive quite consistently. However, he was unable to meet the standard set by Quinn during the heat and ended up settling for second position after scoring 6.17 and 6.27 points off his two waves.
Atkinson scored a disappointing 1.50 off his first wave, but later added 7.10 points to his account of move to a two-wave total of 8.60 points. The performance raised a lot of questions about the Australian’s form, putting him under a lot of pressure as
he headed to Round 5 to battle for survival.
