Miguel Pupo and Jeronimo Vargas win their heats: First round of Super Surf International – Part 11
Done with 20 heats, Super Surf International’s round of 96 just had four more heats left before the event could move on to the next round. A total of 40 surfers had already qualified for the round of 48 and eight more spots remained.
Regardless of the tough surfing conditions at the Praia de Vila beach in Santa Catarina on Wednesday, June 1st, an intense contest was expected as the talented surfers from all around the globe hoped to secure a place for themselves in the next
stage of the competition. The strong offshore winds were a setback for them without any doubt, but it was just something that they had to deal with somehow.
The 21st heat of the first round saw Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in a showdown with his three compatriots, namely Neco Padaratz, Marco Polo and Thiago Camarao.
After giving off an outstanding performance in the third Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event of the year, Pupo had failed to impress in the recently concluded Saquarema Surf Pro International. However, he got off to an excellent start
in Santa Catarina by emerging triumphant in his first heat of the event. With 8.00 and 8.57 points off his two best waves, he clinched victory and secured a place for himself in the round of 48.
Talking to a reporter after the heat, Pupo said, “Conditions were difficult, but I was in the right spot. The guys let me sit on the peak and everything turned out well.”
Padaratz came up with an impressive performance as well. He got off to a sensational start, locking his first wave and using it to earn himself 8.70 points to move in the lead. However, his second-wave score of 7.17 did not prove enough for him to retain
the lead and he ended up finishing in second position. He did, however, qualify for the next round of the Super Surf International.
Polo and Camarao finished with a two-wave score of 11.84 and 8.77 respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The 22nd heat saw Brazil’s Jeronimo Vargas in a battle with America’s Cory Lopez, Hawaii’s Kai Barger and France’s Romain Cloitre.
Vargas got his first good wave in the mid stages of the heat, scoring 6.23 off it. He later followed it up with a 7.50-point wave to settle for a heat-total of 13.73 points. The score turned out to be sufficient for him to walk away with the win, getting
his place in the next round confirmed.
Lopez finished in second place after scoring 6.67 from his first wave and 5.43 from his second. The runner-up position qualified him to the round of 48 as well.
Barger and Cloitre both no longer remain in contention for the event title, finishing in third and fourth place with 11.66 points and 8.33 points respectively.
