Miguel Pupo defeats Kai Otton in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The thrilling surfing action continued at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, as Brazil’s Miguel Pupo took on Australia’s Kai Otton in the ninth heat of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco’s Round 2 on Wednesday, November 2.
The contest turned out to be completely one-sided as Pupo stole the show with his outstanding performance. The excellent effort allowed him to comfortably triumph over Otton and advance through into the third round, removing the latter from the contention
for the event title in the process.
Pupo may not have had the best of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour season so far, but the young Brazilian was determined to change all that at the 10th stop of the season in San Francisco. However, things did not go as he
had hoped and he failed to get himself an ideal start on the opening day of Rip Curl Pro Search. All was not quite lost yet as he still had a chance to bounce back through an improved Round 2 performance.
Pitted against Pupo in Round 2 was Otton. The seasoned Australian surfer had shown a shaky form during his Round 1 heat and therefore found himself standing on the edge in the competition. Another hiccup in performance was going to prove very costly for
him and thus he could not afford to lose.
As the ninth heat of Round 2 kicked off, Pupo wasted no time in asserting his dominance over his rival by locking a wave to unload a string of impressive manoeuvres, posting a 9.10 on the score-board. In response, Otton was only able to get a mere 3.77 off
his first business-wave.
A few minutes later, the 19-year-old Pupo managed to add an additional 7.33 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 16.43 points. The score was indeed an intimidating one and put his Australian opponent under immense pressure. Otton now needed to
find two decent scores in order to stand a chance of acquiring victory. He kept on hunting desperately for the necessary score, but failed to get his hands on a good enough wave. In the dying minutes of the battle, he scored a 5.10 off his final wave to finish
with a heat-total of 8.87 points.
The lacklustre performance by Otton put him in a 7.56-point deficit after the 30 minutes of the heat were up, which resulted in a comfortable victory for Pupo.
