Miguel Torres: Dominick Cruz is a genuine prolific champion yet lacks knockout ability – UFC News
Miguel Torres, the former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) bantamweight champion, shared his views about Dominick Cruz, the current UFC bantamweight champion and said that he is a good brawler with decent tactics and ability to nail opponents in the difficult
ground game but he does not have the straight forward hardcore knockout tendency to win a bout.
The American proud Torres is considered as one of the most prolific mixed martial artists in sport’s history. The 31-year-old veteran has been in a total 44 skirmishes and emerged victorious in 40.
Miguel is known as one of the most lethal submission tactician in UFC and boasts 23 of his total wins by making the opponent submit. Miguel recently became part of UFC and successfully nailed Antonio Banuelos in the inaugural bout.
Later on, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Miguel collected a unanimous decision loss from Demetrious Johnson and recently conquered Nick Pace. Miguel is currently scheduled to take on young surging Michael McDonald on April 21, 2012 at UFC 145.
Because of his vast and diversified experience, Miguel’s say is taken seriously, the reason why he put forth his expert opinion about Cruz. Torres said that Cruz is duly the best bantamweight champion but he lacks certain requisite brawling facets.
Torres revealed that he is a good striker and possesses a ground game that easily outclasses almost all the other brawlers in the division adding that the young Cruz despite having such good game lacks the knockout ability.
While seconding his view point, Miguel said that Cruz does not strive to end the game authoritatively adding that he has collected just seven wins by knockout out of a total 19 which shows that he relies on collecting a decision rather than knocking or making
the opponent submit.
Torres, who is trying to skim the effects of his last year controversy, when hypothecating his possible future collision with Cruz, said, “I truly believe my kind of style will cause Cruz nightmares, as I will stand in front of him, use all my experience
and stand and throw from beginning to end. I’m the type of guy that will take a punch to give a punch. Then, if he decides to shoot in for a takedown, I know I will cause him plenty of problems on the ground, too.”
Miguel pinpointed Cruz’s deficiency and revealed, “Despite his tremendous movement and activity rate, he doesn't have many knockouts on his record and rarely finishes fights. He may well hit hard, but his record doesn't suggest that at this moment in time.”
Dominick and Miguel have not yet met in the octagon and if Torres makes a comeback and intimidates Joe Silva, UFC bout-maker, it is perfectly possible that the veteran Miguel will get a shot at Cruz’s gold. At the moment, Cruz is scheduled to defend his
gold against Urijah Faber at UFC 148.
