Miikka Kiprusoff blocks all, helps Calgary Flames shutout Nashville Predators 1-0 -NHL Update
Calgary is yet to win more than two in a row ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off, but now are back on track and improved to their second straight victory as Miikka Kiprusoff blocked all 26 shots on his net to help
the Flames shutout the Nashville Predators, 1-0, Tuesday night, November 29, 2011, at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Veteran goalie, Pekka Rinne, was opposite to Kiprusoff in the Nashville net and also had a spectacular performance by blocking 28 shots, but the single one he let through ended up costing him the match.
"He's a pretty good goalie there in the other end," Kiprusoff said while talking about Nashville Predators goalie, Pekka Rinne. "Last game here he was the reason why they took those points. I try not to look at him too much. I just try to do my own job.
I feel better that way."
After recovering from four straight loses, Nashville lost another match right after a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, which just might have killed of the winning potential they had hardly built up.
Derek Smith made the game-winning goal for the Calgary Flames with only 1:10 remaining to play in the opening 20 minute period, while the home team managed to kill of the next three penalties they gave as the contest progressed.
"It was unbelievable to get it out of the way," said Smith, a 27-year-old who has played just as many games as his age in the NHL after scoring his first career goal. "It's been a long time coming. I was lucky enough to get a tap-in like that for my first
so it was pretty special."
Calgary certainly has a long way to go if they plan on achieving anything this season. Standing at the 12 number spot with 21 points, they will have to continue winning back-to-back in order to move up, at least above the playoff line.
The Flames play their next game at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday while the Nashville Predators will travel to Vancouver to face off against the Canucks the same day.
