Mikael Lundberg reclaims his European Tour card through the Qualifying School Final Stage
Mikael Lundberg of Sweden secured his European Tour card after finishing second at the European Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage, on Thursday, November 29, 2012.
The tournament was being played at the Stadium Course and the Tour Course, both present at the Catalunya Golf Resort in Spain.
At the end of the tournament, the top-24 and ties succeeded in earning or retaining their playing rights for the 2013 European Tour season.
Lundberg, who earned his last European Tour victory at the 2008 Inteco Russian Open Golf Championship, started his final round campaign sharing the fifth position.
Therefore, he only needed to retain his position on the leaderboard, in a bid to safely secure his European Tour card.
He got off to a confident start, birdying three of the first five holes that he played. He then parred each of the next four holes to reach the turn in three-under.
His back-nine start was not as impressive as the front nine of the course. He bogeyed the 10th and the 11th hole to move back to one-under for the round.
However, the two-time European Tour winner did not allow his wobbles to overhaul his overall performance in the tournament.
He added another two shots on the 13th and the 15th hole to finish the round on a high note. At the end of the day, he found himself settled four strokes behind the winner, John Parry.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that it was really difficult to catch Parry on top of the leaderboard – Parry started his final-round campaign with a four-stroke lead.
Therefore, the Swede was happy to finish second on the leaderboard, which was more than enough for him to reclaim his full-time playing status on the European Tour.
“I started really nicely, but lost a bit of concentration on the tenth and 11th, where I had my only two bogeys of the day,” he said. “I knew it was going to be difficult to catch John, so I’m just happy to take second place and finish the week with a Tour card. It’s a relief”.
