Mike Adams has credentials to solve bullpen problems, says Ruben Amaro Jr.-MLB Update
General Manager for Philadelphia Phillies, Ruben Amaro Jr. is of the view that addition of Mike Adams can go a long way in resolving issues with their bullpen.
The last season was an epic reflection of how relievers can damage the whole campaign of a team.
For the Phillies, the greatest reason why they struggled was late innings meltdowns of their relief pitchers.
The Phillies were winning division titles for the last five years before starting the 2012 season.
Their sudden fall off from the position of dominance in the National League East Division led many wonder how can a team, which was so successful a couple of years ago, decline drastically.
Any team that achieves heights of success experiences downfall gradually, as opposed to suddenly becoming a kind of club that loses flair to challenge oppositions.
When the Phillies entered into the last season, hardly anybody expected them to stay at the bottom of the table for the large part of the first half.
Close evaluation of their 2012 campaign reveals their bullpen as the major weak-link.
It was because of dismal shows by relievers that the Phillies could not make it to the playoffs.
Realising this, the Phillies have taken important measures since the beginning of the offseason.
Amaro believes Adams is a healthy addition. His past record as reliever suggests he can fulfil requirements of the team.
Amaro has explained the importance of having strong pitchers that throw penultimate innings. Relievers and closers are in best position to produce wins for the team, he has elaborated.
Their effectiveness can mask even the poor starts from starters as scoreless innings from their part can result in miraculous victories for the team.
"Obviously the back end of the bullpen is a volatile position from year to year unless guys have a tremendous track record, which Mike has had," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We wanted to try to address that better. Fortunately we have that addressed now."
Only the time will tell as to what extent inclusion of Adams can prove beneficial for the club.
It will be interesting to see how Adams capitalises on the opportunity to play for the Phillies and do something incredible for them.
