Mike Alvarado takes on Mauricio Herrera in a 10-round non-title brawl – Boxing News
Mike Alvarado, the current IBF Latino Light welterweight champion, will take on Mauricio Herrera, the former USBA lightweight champion in a non-title bout spread over 10 rounds on April 14, 2012.
The ring will be stretched at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and the announcement of the bout was made by Brad Goodman, Top Rank’s best bout-maker in an interview. The brawl will be televised on HBO in its Saturday
night show headlined by the main event clash between Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
While announcing the bout, Brad excitedly mentioned that both men are top ranked pugilists adding that each possesses his own unique abilities and hefty experience which will definitely help them in putting forth an epic battle. Goodman while announcing
the engagement said, “Herrera is in to face Alvarado.”
Mike, renowned as ‘Mile High’, has been in a total 32 brawls and has never lost a single bout boasting a huge winning streak. Alvarado is ranked as world number seven light welterweight and is famous for his aggressive, intimidating knockout style. He has
collected 23 wins by knocking out his opponents.
Alvarado has nailed men like Breidis Prescott, Gabriel Martinez, and collected his career’s first ever title, the vacant WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title, by grabbing an authoritative third-round retired hurt win over Ray Narh. Herrera,
on the other hand, lacks heavily in brawling experience.
Mauricio, widely known as ‘El Maestro’, has been in a total 19 bouts. The 31-year-old has lost just one brawl to Mike Anchondo via split decision. Herrera caught media’s attention when he nailed the Russian number two light welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov
in a 12-round brawl by collecting a unanimous decision.
The orthodox Maestro grasped his career’s first ever title, the vacant IBF North American light welterweight title, in that brawl and instantly inclined in the world rankings. Herrera is on a five-bout win streak and has recently nailed the surging Mike
Dallas Junior.
Alex Camponovo, Herrera’s promoter and Thompson Boxing’s executive bout-maker, while commenting about the upcoming engagement said, “This is a great opener for the HBO card. We have all the respect for Alvarado, but this will be a great fight for Mauricio.
This will be great exposure for him.”
The event is promoted by Top Rank and Alavrado will strive hard to protect his long intimidating winning streak at all costs. Herrera needs to come up with an effective strategy since he not only lacks experience but is also overshadowed by Mike’s knockout
potential.
