Mike Brown welcomes the support from Los Angeles Lakers front office - NBA Update
Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike Brown has appreciated the confidence and trust that has been vested in him by the Lakers front office.
Mike had been in a spot of bother ever since Magic Johnson, the Lakers Vice President and a TV analyst, said that Brown could be fired if Lakers lost the 7th first round game against the Denver Nuggets.
However the franchise came to his aide and brushed aside any such possibility regardless of the outcome. Brown was relieved and obliged by the support and steered his team to the semi-finals after grabbing the 7th game.
"Anytime anybody gives you support, you like it," Brown said after the game. "But it wasn't necessary. There's so many people out there that are going to say things or stuff like that. To try to fight that every time, I know, for
me, is impossible for me to do."
He added that Magic is entitled to his opinion and he has nothing against him.
Under an ordinary situation any comments coming from an analyst might not have been given such importance. But the same cannot be implied on Magic Johnson. There is a dichotomy between his job as VP and a sports analyst. If he
had said the same about any other franchise, it wouldn’t have held such repercussions. But, him being a VP, gives his words authencity.
The situation was unprecedented and for a brief period it created a sensation, so much so that the franchise had to pull off a retraction to clear the air.
"The opinion expressed yesterday by Magic Johnson regarding Mike Brown was his personal opinion and was made in his role as a TV analyst," the statement said. "His words were not made on behalf of the Los Angeles Lakers”.
Johnson's statement also attracted the criticism from Denver Coach George Karl. He supported Mike, hailing him as a successful coach. He went on to declare Magic’s statement as “wild and crazy and ESPNish.”
Under Brown, the Lakers have managed to make it this far into the post season. They have had to play without their key players in the latter half of the regular season, especially without Kobe Bryant. But, Mike’s rotational scheme
kept them going and now the Lakers are in the semi-finals.
