Mike Catt receives Officer of the British Empire award
In 2010’s New Year Honors List, Mike Catt, the English Rugby Union player has been awarded with an Officer of the British Empire medal.
Catt retired this year at the age of 38 and is the second rugby figure this year to bag an award from New Year Honors List. He will always be commemorated as the vital member of England’s 2003World Cup winning squad. It was him who booted the ball through
the touchline to affirm England’s victory. Catt played that world cup at the age of 32 and was expected to retire back then, but Catt was not done yet. He went on to play for England as fly-half, full-back, wing and even center.
Michael John Catt, a South African born English Rugby union footballer used to play for London Irish and Bath. His club career was not as detailed as his International career. He joined Bath in 1992 and played his debut against Nottingham RFC. He played
with Bath till 2004 and then he joined London Irish. He had the peak time with the Exiles till 2008, after which he became their backs coach. He was named as the Guiness Premiership Player of the Season in 2006. In his international career the most significant
era was the 2003 World Cup. He replaced Mike Tindall in the team and delivered his best through his superior kicking skills. He was also responsible for taking England in the world cup finals of 2006 for the second successive time.
Talking about his OBE he said, "I am delighted and honoured to have been awarded an OBE. I have been fortunate to have had an enjoyable and successful career in rugby and to now be recognised in such a way makes me feel very privileged.”
The UK honors system is overlooked by Cabinet Office Honors. UK nationals Canada, Australia and Jamaica can be suggested for an honor. OBE have been created by King George V in 1917. This was made to reward services to the war by servicemen in support positions
and civilians. They are awarded to high-flying regional or national roles and to those making making dominant name in their specific fields.
Other then Mike Catt, former RFU chief executive Francis Baron received a CBE. Few other prominent people to receive this honor were Graeme McDowell and Howard Webb.
