Mike Dunlap wants Charlotte Bobcats to trade their 2nd pick - NBA Update
The NBA draft is just around the corner (Thursday) and Charlotte Bobcats, the worst team of last season is musing upon the possibility of trading away their number two pick.
Bobcats, after finishing the season with a 7-59 record, need some major overhauling in their roster. The franchise fired Coach Paul Silas, and after a long search hired Mike Dunlap nearly a week back.
Dunlap has now put his weight behind the proposal of trading the 2nd pick, to acquire extra picks from the draft. He said that the club is considering multiple options at this time.
“I think anybody in our situation would have that on the board,” Dunlap said. “(Our) people are very smart up top. So options and thinking of your variables is a very smart thing to do.”
Things haven’t worked according to the plan for Michael Jordan so far and the latest example of that came when the New Orleans Hornets won the lottery pick. While this year’s draft class is deep as far as superstar material is concerned, Anthony Davis seems to be the only apparent option and he will most likely become the 1st overall pick.
After Davis there are athletes like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Bradley Beal, Harrison Barnes and Thomas Robinson but they are not someone who can turn around a franchise all by themselves.
Bobcats have a lot of loopholes to fill but most importantly they require a good shooter;
“Definitely, shooters,” Dunlap added. “The ability to make the 3(-pointer) is really important because it allows you to play inside.”
The final decision to stick with the number 2 pick or go for the contingency plan rests with Bobcats’ director of basketball operations Rod Higgins and GM Rich Cho.
Mike expressed his complete confidence in their abilities and said that their decision will be for the greater good of franchise.
“That’s their job,” Dunlap said of Cho and Higgins. “And I’m a resource. But those guys have done a wonderful job all year long of evaluation, so I think they have a clear idea of scenarios. There are many variables, but they have it down.
Bobcats have been waiting for this moment (draft) throughout this season. Their plan has always been to rebuild the team around young stars by acquiring quality draft picks, and evolving them gradually. Dunlap’s desire to bring in more established players and find instant success is apparently a deviation from the normal lines, and it remains to be seen whether the Bobcats follow it or not.
