Mike Gascoyne says Lotus will strike back in Spanish GP with upgrades – Formula 1 update
Mike Gascoyne has hinted that the Lotus team will just slow walk in the Turkish Grand prix and will become competitive in the Spanish Grand Prix via bringing some upgrades. Mike said that the team has done well in the first three races but the real fight
in the midfield will start on the Barcelona track.
Lotus team has had a mixed start to the 2011 Formula 1 season because their drivers, Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, have managed to finish their races but without scoring any points, with a couple of hiccups. Zero point on the constructor’s table is
not a worry for Mike as he said, “In general we are reasonably pleased. We had four out of six finishes and showed good pace in the races - China especially. We qualified very well in Malaysia, very close to the teams in front”.
Mike further commented that the Lotus’ car, T128, is still slow in the qualifiers and especially on the straights which will be taken care of when a few new upgrades will come before the Spanish Grand Prix.
Talking about the upgrades, Mike added, “Our major update is coming along for Barcelona, which will be a major update for the diffuser and the rear end of car. I think if we look at scoring points, we have to look at Barcelona onwards. The updates to the
car are going to be very significant”.
He further added that the smaller upgrades will be seen in the T128 in Turkey but the team hopes to score points from Spain onwards.
So far the Lotus team is sitting in the lower rank of the midfield, without scoring any points and is just ahead of the back benchers of Formula 1 like HRT and Virgin.
Lotus’ first target will be to challenge the likes of Force India and Toro Rosso teams to place themselves in contention for a sixth or seventh place finish on the constructor’s table.
For now the next race will be in hot burning Turkey on the 8th of May.
