Mike Green key to Washington Capitals success -NHL Update
Mike Green might be a little rough around the edges and nearly defected from his original draft team during this year’s free agency after becoming an unrestricted free agent, but whatever the situation, he is ultimately the key in their success next season.
The 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season will be a real test for the Washington Capitals as they lost veteran players like Dennis Wideman and Alexander Semin to the free agency. It is certainly hard to imagine, the once Eastern Conference
topping team, playing without those two.
Back to Mike Green, Washington was not willing to take the risk of signing him on to a long term deal seeing how he had faced a number of serve injuries in the past few years. At one moment, his career was put on the brink of forced to come to an end due
to that severity but hopefully, Mike Green is all for making a strong comeback.
He nearly went into negotiations with other teams but Washington Capitals managed to keep their potential filled defenseman on the squad by agreeing to a three-year, $18.25 million contract.
According to Green himself, he believes that the injuries are behind him now, but time will only tell whether that is the case or not.
"It's unfortunate that the last couple of years I've suffered from injuries, but I believe I'm over them -- I think I've got them all out of my system," Green told reporters when he signed a new three-year deal in July. "I think [the Capitals] are happy
that I'm committed to the hockey team and doing the things I have to do to be the best I can."
Many close aides of Green had told him to play next season with a one-year deal but the defenseman insisted that he could play and proving his abilities was not the point.
"I don't think I have to prove anything," Green said. "I think that personally for my own mental state that I get back to that and almost prove to myself that I can do it. I know I'm able to do it; it's just a matter of me going out and doing it."
